Lamb to the Slaughter and The Way Up to Heaven

The Way Up to Heaven, a story about a wife,Mrs Foster, had an obsession of timing because she never wanted to be late. This is indeed a good thing about her to be punctual. Her husband knew her well and yet he was fond of procrastinating but still amazingly able to reach a place just on time.Due to that, Mrs Foster was often annoyed but to show that she was a wife with high endurance, patience and love for her husband, she never grumbled, at least not in the presence of her husband.

It went on like this throughout the years till one day, Mrs Foster had to go to the airport that was less than an hour's distance away to meet her daughter in a far far away place. As usual, her husband was taking his own sweet time to get prepared to be taken along in the same taxi with her to the airport as he was going to the nightclub when her wife was not with him. Then, when they were getting ready to go, her husband suddenly remembered that he had something for Mrs Foster to give to their daughter as a present and he could not find it in the taxi so he went in the house to look for it, increasing her wife's anxiety. No sooner Mr Foster left the taxi than Mrs Foster found the present pressed hard on the seat of her husband and so she rushed in to tell her husband about it. Upon stepping into the door, Mrs Foster heard a long sound that lasted for a long time suddenly stopped. She knew that her husband had reached the highest floor of their house and she would certainly be late if she waited for her husband to find the present in vain and took another long lift down. Moreover, he was not in a hurry and he could hire another cab to take him to his destination as to them such wealthy people that dwelled in a sheer house that even had a lift elevating them up and down , saving them from the wearisome of having to use stairs, hiring another taxi and wasting a hundred dollars at most was going to do nothing to affect their wealth.Even if he did not know that the present was in the cab all the time and that Mrs Foster had found it, with lifts already existing and embedded into human's life at that time and furthermore humans able to travel in the air with enormous planes, technology should by then have acquired a certain level for humans to use telephones as a way of better communication between remote places , Mrs Foster could contact her husband and tell him about the present to make him feel relieved.Mr Foster might not be stranded in the lift as most readers would assume. The sound that stopped abruptly could be the indication that Mr Foster had reached the floor he wanted to go to look for the present. The malfunctioning of the lift could have just been a result of her husband walking out of the lift and accidentally pressing the button again as he went out to go to his nightclub.

Hence, in my opinion, Mrs Foster murdered no one because Mr Foster was not dead as he could have been out when Mrs Foster reached home and called a mechanic to repair the lift. The theme of the story is that we people have to consider the feelings of others that we deliberately kept waiting and "torturing" because sometimes they would get angry and just ignore us and go on without us.

This is very different from The Lamb to the Slaughter as it is clearly stated in black and white that Mary Maloney murdered her husband with a frozen leg of a lamb. This meant Mary Maloney's husband was dead and it was not an accident because her husband had clarify about something that would infuriate Mary Maloney so badly that initially she disbelieved as she was in a state of subconsciousness but then realised that it was true.Topped with the subsequent bad temperament and ungratefulness of her kind and warm offer, her wrath blazed and on the floor laid her husband corpse.

The conclusion is , Lamb to the Slaughter is differs significantly to that of The Way Up to Heaven.Mary Maloney murdered her husband and even covered it all up but in the latter onw Mrs Foster did not murder her husband and her husband was not dead.
