Little Man

Though inferior his height is often deemed,
Scarcely any sport could challenge him .
Flip, leap, hop , hurdle,
Bolt, jog, walk, shuffle,
Swim, row, dive, paddle,
Crawl, wade, climb, slither,
Begun today success in the morrow.
Never a brow that ever furrowed,
Never a tear that ever flowed,
Despite blood that sometimes oozes,
Despite wear and tear that are sometimes cruel,
His passion is never doused.

Employing every possible method,
Perceiving from every possible angle,
To solve a mathematical question.
Nothing else matters,
When he is in deep thought.
A moment later and with wonder,
Writing hand and materials interlocked,
Scribbled jargon on a piece of paper.
Symbols ,letters and numbers,
Clearing a blanket of white fog.
His hands got quicker and quicker,
Until he descends to the base of his works,
Then jabbers its solution to others.
But still preserving his obscurity,
And displaying modesty.

I have never seen him storm no matter how high his wrath rises,
I have never seen him sulk no matter how adamant he is,
I have neither seen him unwilling nor impatient to listen,
I have neither seen him complacent nor scornful no matter how exceptional he is.

I have witnessed him sobbed.
He should have been the rightful owner of a cross-country race trophy ,
He ran with all the energy he could muster.
His hope vanished when a mistake was made,
A huge mistake.
But it was not his.
He had to run an additional distance,
And therefore lost the chance.
All his effort became a waste.
He became dazed after the race.
The prize-giving ceremony came,
I received my trophy with shame and guilt,
even though I did not deserve it.
He listened intently to the name of the winners in hope,
But no.
None that indicated his name.
Tears flowed noiselessly,
But we knew,
We knew everything.

He displayed sportmanship as well as resilience,
Embraced the man-made mistake and left no vengeance.
There is still light,
In the road that is becoming wide.
You can still strive,
You will fight,
You shall show your might,
Make yourself bright,
Become the likes,
Despite of your height.
One may cry,
Even if he's a strong guy,
But never let your spirit die,
And you shall shine.

He rarely oppose to other's views or actions,
But listen to them with focused attention.
He is always willing to help others,
But would never feel bothered.
He is always showing enthusiasm,
in everything and treat them like precious gems.

  1. Okay, first thing, this post is too wordy. There is no rhyming pattern, merely difficult words which I had to use a dictionary when reading it. Although i it was vivid that you were describing Wei Lim, I think this poem needs improvement and personification and other literary devices should be applied instead of spamming good words to show the high level of your English. Indeed, yes, your language is strong, the vocabulary are difficult to comprehend. I was scratching my head and butt while reading your poem. T.T It is good that you used similes and metaphors which are of "high" levels that made the poem more interesting. good job and bad job jia yi!
