Pride and Prejudice summary and book review

Summary
The story began with the Bennet family receiving news that the Bingleys have moved in Netherfield Park. Mrs Bennet was excited that she wanted to acquaint her eldest daughter, Jane , with Mr Bingley , hoping that Jane would be married to a nice man like Mr Bingley. Not long afterwards, the Bennet family was invited to a ball at the Bingley’s. As Mrs Bennet had hope, Mr Bingley had a good impression of Jane. Everyone in the ball found a partner and kept on danced with one another except for Elizabeth and Mr Darcy, a friend of Mr Bingley who only danced once with Mrs Hurst and another with Miss Bingley, the sister of Mr Bingley. From his reluctance to dance, it gave the Bennets a notion that Mr Darcy was so proud of his possessions and rank that he did not feel he was worth dancing with anyone. But then, while Jane was already taken by Mr Bingley, he introduced Elizabeth Bennet, the second eldest daughter after Jane , to Mr Darcy, where he had a first glance at the lady whom he would later have misunderstandings with. The next event was the acquaintance of a clergyman, Mr Collins, who initially admired Jane but later prefer the second daughter ,Elizabeth, since Jane was already engaged with Mr Bingley, eventually making a proposal to her which she declined. Though unable to fulfil his wish, he stilled admired Elizabeth. However, his love was drawn towards Charlotte Lucases when she attempted to draw away his love of Elizabeth but, though succeeded, ended up being his wife and moving to Hertfordshire where he and his patron Lady Catherine de Bourgh lived. One day, Elizabeth, her sisters and Mr Collins adhered to Lydia’s intention by taking a walk to Meryton where on their journey there they met with one of the officers the younger sisters of Elizabeth were fond of , Mr Denny , accompanied by a stranger which was later introduced as Mr Wickham. Then, Mr Darcy and Mr Bingley came down from the street but when Mr Darcy looked at Mr Wickham, both countenances changed colour. They quickly parted. Elizabeth became curious on the men’s actions towards each other. Elizabeth’s questions were answered a few days later when Mr Wickham was invited to Meryton for an evening by Mr Collins. According to him, Mr Darcy revered Mr Wickham’s father very much and promised before his death that he promised to provide for the welfare of Mr Wickham. But eventually he abandoned him. Elizabeth’s anger and despise of Mr Darcy was stoked when her sister Jane received a letter from Mr Bingley one day stating that he was moving elsewhere from Netherfield Park and might not be able to return to meet up with Jane for a long time and was later told that it was connected with the persuasion of Mr Darcy, who Mr Bingley esteemed and trusted very much, that he, Mr Bingley, and Jane were not an ideal match of a couple therefore suggesting to Mr Bingley that he leaves the neighbourhood where the Bennets lived. Jane was as expected to be astonished that their relationship would suddenly break and she and grieved for losing a possible mate which she really loved. Not long after, Elizabeth along with her neighbours the Gardiners were invited to stay at the home of Mr Collins, near the dwelling of his patron. There she unexpectedly met Mr Darcy and expressed her wrath on him. Mr Darcy was angered and after subtly justifying his actions and intentions of abandoning Mr Wickham and alienating Mr Bingley from Jane, which he later confessed as being mistaken by him and apologised for it, left the house, after which Elizabeth received a letter from Mr Darcy explaining the intention of his actions. Elizabeth read it while she was taking a walk at the park where she again met up with Mr Darcy. It was then that she started repenting her treatment towards Mr Darcy. Their relationship during Elizabeth’s stay there changed greatly from hatred and disparagement to a certain degree of affection. Elizabeth was very astonished when she one day received news that Lydia was engaged in an elopement of Mr Wickham and were heading somewhere else. A few days later, they were spotted with the help of Mr Darcy .Lydia was married to Mr Wickham. As for Elizabeth and Mr Darcy, as their relationship developed, they were finally engaged and in love with each other.

Review
The storyline is not pure romance, though large part of it is, but with the occasional eventful inclusion of humour and rare naiveness such as the capricious affection of Mr Collins. Learnt a number of matrimonial terms.
